From smart projector to home assistant, Ballie blends mobility, personality, and AI into one futuristic companion
After years of anticipation, Samsung is finally bringing its rolling robot companion Ballie to life. Originally introduced as a prototype back in 2020, Ballie captured imaginations with its minimal, ball-shaped design and promise of ambient home intelligence. Now, in 2025, the next-generation version is ready to roll — literally — into people’s homes, equipped with upgraded AI, a built-in projector, and smart home capabilities.
From rolling bot to roaming assistant
Ballie is more than a novelty gadget. It’s Samsung’s vision of ambient AI — smart technology that quietly supports your daily life without needing to be held, touched, or tapped. Instead of living on a screen, Ballie lives in your space.
One of Ballie’s most futuristic features is its built-in projector, which allows it to display videos, messages, ambient lighting, or even a virtual pet on your wall or floor. Think of it as a tiny mobile cinema that can follow you around the house. You can cook with recipe videos projected onto your counter, display calming visuals in the living room, or have motivational reminders appear on your bedroom wall when you wake up.
Smarter with every step
What makes Ballie truly different from traditional smart assistants is its mobility and contextual awareness. It’s designed to follow you through your home and learn from your behavior. Thanks to upgraded sensors and AI algorithms, it can recognize routines, avoid obstacles, and respond in real-time to what’s happening around it.
Paired with Samsung’s SmartThings platform, Ballie can also control lights, thermostats, appliances and more. Want the lights to dim as you settle down to watch a movie? Ballie can make that happen — without you lifting a finger or saying a word.
Personality meets practicality
Unlike most voice assistants, Ballie has a personality. It chirps, spins, and reacts to interactions in ways that feel expressive and almost pet-like. While it doesn’t have a face, its posture and lights give it a “character” that feels surprisingly alive. In demos, it’s shown rolling toward people to greet them, or backing away politely when given space.
The goal? To make technology more emotionally intuitive — and less intrusive.
When and where?
Samsung hasn’t confirmed an exact launch date or pricing yet, but the robot is expected to become available in the U.S. sometime later this year. It's still unclear whether Ballie will be positioned as a mainstream product or a premium smart home companion — but one thing is certain: it’s no longer science fiction.
As AI continues to move from screen-based tools to physical, everyday presence, Ballie could be one of the first truly mainstream personal robots.
